Las Vegas Wildlife Education: 8 Ways to Scare Geese Away

It is a lovely outing to go to your neighborhood park to feed the geese. They float on the water and will come right up to you to take food. The scene is less tranquil once they start moving onto your property. They are territorial and have no problem chasing other birds, and even humans away that are trespassing on what they believe to be their property. They will also defecate on your lawn, meaning that it will become a slippery mess where your children cannot play. It is time to take back your lawn.

Taking back your grass
1. Bird netting is an easy and effective way to keep all types of birds from landing on your trees and lawn. Depending on the netting that you install, the initial capital outlay may not be as inexpensive as you hope. However, proper netting will last for years and will prove to be a good investment. Make sure that the netting is UV protected to keep it from becoming brittle.
2. Scare them away with loud noises. These are easy to achieve if you have a little bit of patience. You can stay in the area and set off an airhorn as soon as they land on your property. You can also play loud music or run between them making loud noises. You will need to check the noise ordinances in your area before making too loud a noise.
3. Some chemical repellents on the market can be applied to your lawn. This will irritate the trigeminal nerves and will mean that your grass is not a viable source of food anymore.
4. Visual deterrents have been known to keep geese from landing in some areas. You can purchase a decoy coyote and place it in the area. Geese are naturally afraid of coyotes and will not willingly inhabit an area where they think one is living.
5. If you have a large body of water on your property, it will be even more attractive for geese. You can install sloping along the shore to make it difficult for them to find a place for their nests.
6. Plastic swans floating on the water will create the illusion that your property is already inhabited. The bonus of the swans is that they will move on the water, and this makes them seem more realistic.
7. Motion activated speakers, and sprinklers are always a good deterrent. You should place it high enough that the geese trigger the sensor before they land. A bright light or sharp blast of water will make them feel very unwelcome.
8. If you have a large area that needs to be protected from geese you can use a herding dog. Herding dogs will not hurt the birds but they can be trained to scare them away. This should not be used to scare away geese that have already nested and laid eggs in the area.
